Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge, LA
April 6-8, 2007 (Easter Weekend)

North of Bogalusa, Louisiana, the Pearl River begins to form a three to five mile wide floodplain. Covering almost the entire floodplain is a forest of mostly hardwoods with pockets of baldcypress and gum tupelos. Woven through the forest is a web of waterways – the Pearl River itself and lesser streams such as the Bogue Chitto River, Old River, Big Creek, Hog Slough and numerous others. These streams flow into and out of lakes named Socias, George, Speirs, and “gum” ponds – unnamed bald cypress and water tupelo swamps that are almost always wet.

For three days, our canoeing party will weave our way through this web of forest and waterways - almost always choosing the narrowest and most canopied stream – the back “alleys” of the forest. Each afternoon, our intrepid crew will stop to camp on high ground somewhere in the Pearl River Basin.

By early April, spring will have arrived. Most trees will be freshly green with new leaves or needles plus a scattering of blooms sprinkled around to provide variety to the scenery.

The schedule is to begin our exploration from a public launch northwest of Picayune, Mississippi on Friday morning, April 6th and to take out miles downstream on Easter Sunday, April 8th. (Our route and take out site will be determined by the water level of the Pearl River that weekend.)

The leader will be Byron Almquist, who has for the past 25 years explored the upper basin while paddling, hiking and camping.

The leader provides
guide service and paddling and wilderness skills instruction. Provided are canoes, paddling accessories, camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags and pads), dry bags and all group equipment. Also provided are breakfasts and dinners - and chocolate eggs from the Easter bunny.

Each paddler provides nylon rain suit, appropriate clothing and footwear and three river lunches.

The trip fee is $150 per paddler or $275 for two related paddlers. There is a credit of $25 per paddler if a paddler furnishes his or her own canoe. The fee is due when making a reservation for the outing but no later than Monday March 19th.

To make a reservation email, byron@canoeandtrail.com or call 504 834-5257.
